What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas père, 'The Three Musketeers' (Les trois mousquetaires, 1844).
  • Charlie Sheen was originally planned for the role of Porthos, but ultimately played Aramis.
  • Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnell, and Oliver Platt underwent a six-week training course in fencing and horseback riding before filming began. Charlie Sheen skipped his training course as he was busy filming 'Hot Shots 2'.
  • The role of D'Artagnan was offered to Brad Pitt and Steven Dorff, but the actors declined.
  • For filming in various episodes, Walt Disney offered roles to Jean-Claude Van Damme, Johnny Depp, Cary Elwes, and Gary Oldman.
  • Winona Ryder was considered for the role of Milady de Winter.
  • A large part of the film was shot in Austria, in Perchtoldsdorf, where Rebecca De Mornay finished school and college.
  • Concurrently with filming, another version of the film from rival studio TriStar was in development, with Johnny Depp and director Jeremiah S. Chechik attached. Ultimately, the development of the other film was shut down.
  • Part of the filming took place in Charlestown (Cornwall, United Kingdom) and Landsee Castle (Burgenland); also in Liechtenstein, Maria-Enzersdorf, Hinterbrühl, Korneuburg (Lower Austria) and Vienna (specifically in the Hofburg). One chase scene was filmed in the Golitha Falls grove by the Fowey River, in Cornwall. The small harbor in the village of Charlestown housed the galleon used in the filming.
  • Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O’Donnell, and Oliver Platt underwent a six-week training course in fencing and horseback riding before filming began. Charlie Sheen skipped his training course as he was busy filming "Hot Shots 2".
  • The role of D’Artagnan was offered to Brad Pitt and Stephen Dorff, but the actors declined.
