What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's script was repeatedly rewritten. Virtually nothing remained of the original version by John Skip and Craig Spector in the finished film. Only half of Leslie Bohem's script survived. William Wisher Jr. and David Shaw polished the script, and Michael De Luca assembled the final version just a few days before filming began.
  • The graduation ceremony scene was significantly shortened in the finished film. The following moments were cut: — Dan's speech; — the dialogue between Greta and Racine; — the conversation between Yvonne, Alice, and Greta was much longer; — the conversation about parents and future plans; — a scene in which Alice's father gives her the camera she had been saving up for (when they walk together to take a group photo, you can notice that Alice gives the camera to her father).
  • This is the only film in the series where Freddy's rhyme was altered. Original: “One, two, Freddy's coming for you. Three, four, better lock your door. Five, six, grab your crucifix. Seven, eight, gonna stay up late. Nine, ten, never sleep again.” Altered version: “One, two, Freddy's coming for you. Three, four, better lock your door. Five, six, grab your crucifix. Seven, eight, better stay up late. Nine, ten, he's back again.”
  • Stephen King and Frank Miller were offered the opportunity to write the screenplay and direct the film.
  • The sinister laugh heard before the end credits is voiced by Vincent Price and taken from Michael Jackson's 1982 music video "Thriller".
  • When Ellis goes for an ultrasound, one of the signs on the doors reads "Dr. Talalay" (referencing one of the film's producers, Rachel Talalay). However, this is the only film Talalay did not work on. Several years later, she directed the sixth episode titled "The Last Nightmare".
  • A small portion of the film was shot for viewing with special 3-D glasses.
  • Many public organizations perceived the film as a kind of statement against abortion.
  • The motorcycle ridden by Dan is a Yamaha V-Max 1200. Its license plate reads "FREDDY".
  • During the rape scene involving Amanda among the prisoners, Robert Englund can be spotted without Freddy's makeup.
  • All death scenes were significantly cut down to avoid an 'X' rating. Dan's death scene was much longer and more brutal: close-ups of Dan's disfigured face and Freddy's laughter were cut. Scenes that last only a few seconds in the film originally lasted several minutes. Greta's dinner scene was also edited: originally, Freddy was feeding Greta her own internal organs with his glove. Mark's death was also intended to be more bloody.
