What's left behind the scenes
- Plans to film this movie were first announced in 2010, and James Franco was originally slated to play Ricky. Franco left the project due to scheduling conflicts, and the role went to Joaquin Phoenix. Filming was repeatedly postponed, and in 2013, Phoenix also left the project, with the role going to Jim Carrey. Carrey waited a year for filming to begin, then left as well, and the role went to Nicolas Cage. Cage saw this as his chance to remind audiences that he is a comedic actor, but the producers asked for action scenes to be added to the plot. Their request was rejected, and the project was put on hold until 2016, when Zac Efron and Amazon became interested in the script.
