What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Alessandro Baricco's novel "1900. Legend of the Pianist" (Novecento, 1994).
  • Part of the filming took place in the city of Odessa (Ukraine), in the military harbor on the vessel "Lesozavodsk," which was equipped with an impressive pipe and decorated to resemble a ship from the early 20th century, as well as on the Potemkin Stairs, where one of the characters plays the trumpet while sitting. Some filming was done in open water, and since the "Lesozavodsk" was moored without engines, it was towed by a rescue vessel. Once, during filming, a storm arose, and the film crew, along with the extras (more than 200 people in total), had to spend the night on the ship at sea. As the ship was not prepared for this, conditions were difficult for the people on board.
  • The runtime of the Italian version of the film is 170 minutes, which is 50 minutes longer than the international version.
  • It can be noticed that the fracture lines of the single recorded record shown at the beginning of the film in the store do not match those that would result from gluing together the pieces into which he broke it.
