What's left behind the scenes

  • Veuve Clicquot is not just a champagne label, but a very real woman, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot-Ponsardin. Widowed relatively early, at the age of 27, she inherited her husband’s entire business, including the wineries, and not only inherited it but transformed it into one of the most famous champagne brands in Europe.
  • Barbe-Nicole was a true innovator, but not the first woman to manage a winery. And the brand name “Veuve Clicquot” was not her invention at all. At that time, it was a traditional name for a winery managed by a widowed woman. Companies such as “Widow Laurent-Perrier”, “Widow Chanoine” and “Widow Blanche” already existed. However, they handed over the business to experienced managers.
