What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the memoir by Jordan Belfort, “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2008).
  • DiCaprio spent many months working with Belfort to convey certain moments of his life as accurately as possible.
  • Margot Robbie admitted that once, during the filming of a scene, she accidentally hit Leonardo DiCaprio a little harder than usual. After that, absolute silence fell on the set, but then a thunderous laugh erupted, and Robbie was afraid DiCaprio would sue her and apologized, but he was impressed by her boldness and asked her to hit him again.
  • During the kissing scene between Leonardo DiCaprio and Joanna Lamley, Leonardo was so nervous that it took 27 takes to film the scene as required.
  • While searching for an actor for the role of Donnie Azoff, Martin Scorsese asked to meet with Jonah Hill, but Hill insisted on an audition. These were Hill's first auditions in six years.
  • The cast assembled by Martin Scorsese also includes three well-known directors: Rob Reiner, Spike Jonze, and Jon Favreau.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio claims that he and Martin Scorsese were able to "push the boundaries" in depictions of scenes with an excessive level of sexual content and "make the film exactly as they wanted" primarily because the film's production was financed independently, without any major studios. Nevertheless, Scorsese edited the sexual scenes to avoid an NC-17 rating.
  • The real Mark Hanna claims that he acquired 25% of Belfort’s business and worked with him for another two years. However, this was not mentioned in the film.
  • Rob Reiner’s first film role in the last 10 years.
  • DiCaprio was obsessed with playing Jordan Belfort from the moment he picked up the book in 2007. However, DiCaprio was not only interested in the story’s connection to the recent Wall Street crisis, he was also drawn to Jordan’s sincerity and uncompromising description of what he had experienced.
  • Scorsese confirmed that the film's quirky editing was done intentionally, especially in scenes where the characters are high. Each time Jordan took drugs, the cuts become quite unusual, while with the "sober" scenes everything is normal.
  • Kenneth Choi gained 11 kg for the role of Chester Ming.
  • A young Steve Buscemi appears on the television screen when Max Belfort (Rob Reiner) is watching the television series "The Equalizer" (1985-1989).
  • Chris Evans and Joseph Gordon-Levitt auditioned for a role in the film.
  • Martin Scorsese claims he did not meet the real Jordan Belfort until the film's premiere. However, Belfort was on set during filming in Scorsese's presence.
  • The film begins with a promotional video for "Stratton Oakmont TV," which is a reference to the iconic "Dreyfus Fund TV" (1958) commercial featuring the famous lion.
  • The license plate "RFK 575" on the "Jaguar" car that Jordan drove when he first met Donnie is the same license plate that was also used in other films: "Long Kiss Goodnight" (1996), "Final Destination" (2000), and "Zoolander" (2001).
  • Julie Andrews was considered for the role of Aunt Emma before Joanna Lamley was cast.
  • To show Jordan's emotional state, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto constantly changed lens types. Spherical optics were used for scenes where Jordan was sober and clear-headed, while anamorphic lenses were used when the opposite was true.
  • Despite initial announcements that this would be Martin Scorsese's first non-3D film to be shot entirely digitally, most of the film was actually shot on film. Exterior shots were filmed with digital cameras to reduce the need for extensive lighting.
  • Jonah Hill received only $60,000 for this film. He agreed to the minimum rate set by the Screen Actors Guild. As he stated in an interview: “I begged them to fax me the papers,” the actor said. “I was willing to wait all night because a signed contract would guarantee my involvement in this film. I made about $60,000 over seven months. And that’s before taxes… But I was willing to sell my house and pay for the opportunity to work with Scorsese.”
  • Blake Lively and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley were considered for the role of Naomi. Teresa Palmer and Amber Heard auditioned for the role before Margot Robbie was cast.
  • Throughout the film, the characters say the word “Fuck” 506 times.
  • In the final scene, Jordan Belfort himself appears in a cameo as the presenter who introduces Leonardo DiCaprio, who played him.
  • The actors sniffed powdered vitamin B in scenes involving cocaine use. Despite the unpleasant sensation in their noses, it gave the actors more energy to perform their scenes.
  • Sharon Jones’ cameo, performing “Goldfinger” at Jordan and Naomi’s wedding—the title song from the James Bond film of the same name—serves as a reference to Jordan Belfort’s real wedding, where the song “Nobody Does It Better,” the title song from another Bond film, *The Spy Who Loved Me* (1977), was played.
  • When Jordan Belfort is talking to FBI agents on the yacht, he hands one of them a guest list for a wedding. The names on the list are the real names of the film crew members.
  • Jonah Hill wore a prosthetic penis during the scene where Donnie sees Naomi and masturbates.
  • Margot Robbie drank three shots of tequila in a row before filming the semi-nude scene with Leonardo DiCaprio.
  • At the moment Belfort’s wife says it was their last time, the protagonist is seen lying down and undressed from the waist down. But in the next moment, when the wife gets out of bed, Belfort is already lying in his pants.
  • When Belfort tries to leave with his daughter, Naomi breaks the car window, and at that moment, on the edit between two takes, a ring disappears from Belfort's hand.
  • In the scene where Teresa catches Belfort with Naomi, she manages to slam the limousine door shut on the second attempt, but in the next frame the door is open again, and Teresa closes it once more, this time silently.
  • Modern cars and a tram from the 2000s appeared in the Geneva scenes.
  • When Jordan Belfort's wife, Naomi, provokes him by spreading her legs and saying she isn't wearing underwear, the moment she quickly moves her hand and closes her legs, a fleeting glimpse reveals she is actually wearing white underwear.
  • During the flight on the plane, the hero sometimes has a white cloth under his head, and sometimes doesn't.
  • In the scene where Teresa catches Belfort with Naomi, she opens the car door. In the next frame (from the other side of the street) the limousine is no longer there. With another change of frame (as in the first scene), the car is just pulling away from the curb.
  • At the wedding, while Jordan is dancing, the flower in his jacket's breast pocket breaks and hangs upside down. When Naomi calls Jordan over to meet Aunt Emma, the flower is still hanging from his pocket. And by the end of the conversation with the aunt, the flower is neatly standing in the pocket, bud-up, once again.
  • In the yacht scene with the FBI agents, the position of the sun (time of day) constantly changes throughout the scene.
  • The film is based on Jordan Belfort's memoir, "The Wolf of Wall Street" (2008).
  • Leonardo DiCaprio claims that he and Martin Scorsese could "go beyond established boundaries" in depicting scenes with an excessive level of sexual content and "make the film as they wanted" primarily because the film's production was independently financed, without any major studios involved. Nevertheless, Scorsese edited the sexual scenes to avoid an NC-17 rating.
  • Scorsese confirmed that the film's quirky editing was done intentionally, especially in scenes where the characters are under the influence. Each time Jordan takes drugs, the scene cuts change in a very unusual way, while "sober" scenes are normal.
  • A young Steve Buscemi appears on the television screen when Max Belfort (Rob Reiner) is watching the television series "The Equalizer" (1985-1989).
  • The license plate “RFK 575” on the Jaguar that Jordan drove when he first met Donnie is the same license plate that was also used in other films: “Long Kiss Goodnight” (1996), “Final Destination” (2000), and “Zoolander” (2001).
  • Sharon Jones’ cameo performing “Goldfinger,” the title song from the James Bond film of the same name, at Jordan and Naomi’s wedding is a reference to Jordan Belfort’s real-life wedding where “Nobody Does It Better,” the title song from another Bond film, “The Spy Who Loved Me” (1977), was played.
