What's left behind the scenes

  • The filmmakers initially wanted to offer the role of Katie to actress Natalie Portman, and Ricky Martin for the role of Javier.
  • The film's plot is a loose depiction of the life of producer Joan Fregalett Jensen, who moved to Cuba with her parents in 1958.
  • Neither Romola Garai, who played Katie, nor Diego Luna, who played Javier, had any prior dance experience. Before filming began, they spent 10 weeks in Puerto Rico, practicing dance for 8 hours a day with producer Joan Fregalett Jensen and four other dancers under the guidance of professional choreographers.
  • In 2006, Entertainment Weekly magazine ranked the film 11th on its list of the 25 worst sequels of all time.
