What's left behind the scenes
- ’Faust’ was the last film Murnau directed in Germany – shortly after filming wrapped, he moved to the United States.
- Lillian Gish and Leni Riefenstahl auditioned for the role of Gretchen.
- After the film was shot and edited, producer Erich Pommer suddenly decided that Hans Kyser’s screenplay was unsatisfactory. A new version of the screenplay for the finished film was commissioned from Gerhart Hauptmann, but Pommer liked what Hauptmann wrote even less. In the end, the film was released as it had been shot.
