What's left behind the scenes

  • The first in Hollywood history detailed and frank depiction of a child’s birth.
  • The dialogue in the long opening scene was not written in the script and was the result of improvisation. It took 5 days to film.
  • Richard Gere admitted that he didn't understand the ending of the film until it was explained to him by audience members at a preview screening.
  • When Gira's son Homer was born in 2000, he took the opportunity to visit the maternity ward to better understand what was happening there.
  • To make it easier for Farrah Fawcett to film the “nudity” scene in the fountain, director Robert Altman (1925-2006) demanded that everyone be removed from the set except himself, the cinematographer, and the person responsible for sound recording. To everyone's surprise, the actress stated that she was not embarrassed at all and refused to film without the rest of the crew. Everyone returned, she performed the scene, and it all ended with long applause in her honor.
