What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on a book by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson.
  • One scene, originally four minutes long, had to be shortened and re-edited to secure a 'PG' rating (parental guidance suggested). A scene with an ice sculpture of nude Logan and Jessica was completely removed from the film. Another scene was cut because it depicted drug use. The footage of all these scenes and the film's music were lost during the so-called 'purge,' when Kirk Kerkorian (1917-2015), the owner of the film company 'MGM,' sold off as many of the company's extensive archives as he could, and simply discarded the rest.
  • The waterfalls and steps where Logan jumps to return under the dome were filmed at the Water Gardens in Fort Worth, Texas. Initially, the pool was about three meters deep, but in 2004, four people drowned near the spot where Logan and Jessica jumped. The pool was closed to visitors and reopened only in 2007. Upon reopening, the pool's depth was reduced to half a meter.
  • The costumes were initially designed to be more revealing, but this would have required more makeup for the exposed body parts (and therefore more funding), so the costumes were made more modest.
  • The scene in the ice cave was filmed in Los Angeles in the summer. The frozen people were portrayed by extras painted white. For each take, they had to stand completely still for several minutes.
  • The model of the city under the dome lacks detail to look realistic, but the model was made large enough to construct a real railway with miniature cars on it. Many of the buildings in the foreground reached a meter in height. The buildings were constructed at different scales depending on the distance to the camera.
