What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, the film was intended to be titled "Writers".
  • The following well-known writers are mentioned in the film (or their books are read by the characters) — Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964), Richard Ford (1944), Joan Didion (1934), Stephen King (1947), and Raymond Carver (1938-1988).
  • Rusty's story, which Sam sends to Stephen King, is an adaptation of the lyrics to the song I've Just Seen a Face (The Beatles, 1965). Rusty claims that she remembers this song every time she sees Kate. The story itself begins with Rusty's words: "I remember it hurting. It hurt to look at her."
  • Samantha, played by Lily Collins, wrote a paper titled Under the Pink — the name of Tori Amos's 1994 album.

  • Rusty, played by Nat Wolff, gives Kate, played by Liana Liberato, a book. It’s a 25th-anniversary edition of Stephen King’s novel “It” (1986). Rusty is a big fan of King’s work.
  • When Bill asks Sam, “How’s Louie doing?”, she replies, “What Louie?”. She is, at that moment, reading Ed Brubaker comics, which Louie adores (as he mentions in one of the earlier scenes of the film).
  • At the beginning of the film, Erika, played by Jennifer Connelly, is reading “Blue Nights” (2011) by Joan Didion, a memoir about the author’s daughter’s death. By this point, Erika has already lost her own daughter, Sam, played by Lily Collins.
