What's left behind the scenes

  • To create a suitable image, Tarkovsky took Yankovsky to Italy and left him alone in one of the hotels for several days.
  • The main role in the film was to be played by Andrei Tarkovsky's friend and favorite actor, Anatoly Solonitsyn, but he died of lung cancer in June 1982, even before the script was written. Later, the role was offered to Oleg Yankovsky, and the script was written specifically for him.
  • Yankovsky’s agonizing, bordering on fainting both for the actor and the audience, walk with a lit candle along the bottom of the pool, the filming of the water, and the final frames of the film are considered a classic of world-class cinematography.
