What's left behind the scenes

  • Representatives of actress Jennifer Jason Leigh doubted whether it was worth signing her on for filming a movie with such a small budget. The film's producers had to resort to trickery. Leigh's representatives were told that Julianne Moore was vying for the role, and if Leigh refused, Moore would be happy to play Sarah.
  • Saoirse Ronan was initially cast for the role of Amy.
  • Thomas McDonnell was initially cast as the lead role.
  • The scene where Sutter's father asks him to pay the bar bill was supposed to end with Tommy leaving. Its continuation (Sutter reaches for his wallet, then asks Amy if she has any money, and they both try to gather the necessary amount) was improvised by Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley, but the director liked it and included the extended scene in the film.
  • The love scene lasting over 2 minutes at the end of the film was shot in one take.
  • The first bed scene in the acting careers of Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley.
