What's left behind the scenes

  • Laurence Fishburne turned down the role of Ike Turner (1931-2007) five times. He only agreed when he learned that Angela Bassett would be playing Tina Turner.
  • Angela Bassett simply lip-synced to the songs featured in the film. All the songs were performed by Tina Turner herself. According to Bassett, she can act and dance, but she has trouble with singing.
  • Laurence Fishburne provided the vocals for Ike Turner.
  • Actress Vanessa Bell Calloway played the role of Jackie, with whom Tina Turner shared an interest in Buddhism. She is a true Christian and therefore felt some discomfort at having to recite Buddhist prayers during filming. Director Brian Gibson (1944-2004) allowed her to simply articulate the words, rather than say them, and the sound was then simply dubbed over the footage.
  • Holly Berry and Whitney Houston (1963-2012) were also contenders for the role of Tina Turner.
  • The house shown in Los Angeles – as well as the original furniture and decor – actually belonged to Ike and Tina Turner.
  • During the filming of the first domestic violence scene, Angela Bassett was injured. Falling from the high back of the sofa, she put her hands forward to cushion the impact and suffered a fracture in her right hand.
  • The house shown in Los Angeles – as well as the original furniture and decor – actually belonged to Ike and Tina Turner.
