What's left behind the scenes

  • Johnny Depp lost 25 pounds (approximately 11.3 kilograms) specifically for the film.
  • Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey, and Robert Downey Jr. were considered for the role of Edward.
  • In this film, Vincent Price played his last role.
  • Throughout the entire film, Johnny Depp speaks 169 words.
  • The idea for the film came from a drawing Tim Burton made when he was a teenager. Originally, the film was intended to be a musical.
  • Filming took place in several cities in the state of Florida.
  • Burton stated that Edward was 'something like a beloved dog' to him.
  • While filming this movie, Tim Burton was simultaneously shooting a documentary, "Conversations with Vincent." The film was left unfinished due to the death of its main subject, the iconic actor Vincent Price.
  • In late 2005, the controversial theater director Matthew Bourne staged a ballet, "Edward Scissorhands," set to music by Danny Elfman, which was based on Burton's film. The film's composer, Danny Elfman, wrote several additional musical pieces for the ballet.
  • The town where Edward appears was modeled after the director's hometown (Burbank, California, USA).
  • Some of the intricately trimmed trees sculpted by Edward can still be seen at the Tavern On the Green restaurant in New York City.
  • In the scene where Edward goes to sharpen his hands, the storefront featured in the film was created based on the real facade of Crowder Brothers at the Southgate shopping center. At the time of filming, the store genuinely offered sharpening services and displayed a giant motorized Victorinox knife in its window.
  • The restaurant where the family eats is part of the national Sambo's chain. It was located directly across the street from the Southgate shopping mall, as shown in the film. Due to the controversial nature of the name and interior design, the entire chain of these restaurants was closed down in the late 1970s – early 1980s, with the exception of their very first establishment in Santa Barbara, California, which remains open to this day. The building where the film was shot had been abandoned for many years until Tim Burton arrived in town. And specifically for the filming, it was renovated to look like a functioning restaurant.
  • Tim Burton asked Robert Smith of The Cure to write the soundtrack for the film and even sent him the script. Robert was busy at the time recording their album Disintegration and had no idea who Burton was. He ultimately declined, and Danny Elfman took on the task of creating the soundtrack.
  • The role of the inventor was written specifically for Vincent Price.
  • Winona Ryder turned down a role in 'The Godfather Part III' (1990) to appear in this film. And Johnny Depp convinced her to do so.
  • Drew Barrymore was considered for the role of Kim Boggs.
  • During the filming of the scene where Edward runs back to his house, Johnny Depp lost consciousness due to a very high temperature and a leather costume.
  • During the filming of the scene where Vincent Price's character dies, the actor fainted. Tim Burton decided to include this particular take in the final cut.
  • The longest monologue spoken by Johnny Depp in the film consists of 16 words.
  • O-Lan Jones actually played the organ music herself, which is performed by her character Esmeralda.
  • Tom Cruise turned down the role in this film because he wanted a more optimistic ending.
  • When Peg wants to bandage her daughter's injured left arm, Kim initially raises her right arm, but quickly extends her left one.
  • In the scene where Peg enters the house, Joyce's cigarette is constantly of varying lengths.
  • Peggy's glasses constantly shift position as she applies cream to Edward's face to heal his scars.
  • When Edward finishes his sculptures made of bushes, most of them are much taller than the original hedge.
  • After the phone call, Joyce searches for something to wear, throwing clothes onto the bed behind her. Then she grabs burgundy clothing, but when she meets her friends, she is wearing yellow and green.
  • After Edward tells the Boggs family that Joyce took off all her clothes, Peg sits motionless, holding a fork in her right hand. In the next shot, she is holding food with both hands.
  • In the diner, a straw is inserted into Kim's glass at an angle. In the next shot, it is in a vertical position.
  • When Bill is watching television in the garden, Edward is standing next to him. In the next shot, Edward is standing further away and starts walking towards Bill again.
  • In the diner scene, in one shot the Boggs’ son's hand is holding a bottle of tomato sauce. In the next shot, he is already putting it back down, even though he didn't lift it up in the previous one.
  • There should be no eggs on the beaters of the cookie-making machine after mixing.
  • When Peg first brings Edward home, she parks the car to the left of the house. By the time everyone gathers around the corner, the car is already gone, even though Peg hasn't even left the house.
  • The first dog appears to be a different breed before and after Edward grooms it.
  • When all the dogs are queuing up for Edward, one dog is sitting on a long table, the only one visible in the scene. When Edward begins grooming, a small square table appears in the frame. Then the long table disappears. And after the dog is groomed, the small table vanishes and the long table reappears, the one the dog was originally sitting on.
  • When Joyce knocks on the Boggs' door, the doorknocker clearly displays the inscription “The Boggs,” but when Peggy closes the door, the inscription disappears.
  • In the scene where Peg stands at the gates leading to the garden of the manor where she first meets Edward, the estate and fields are visible immediately beyond the gates, despite the fact that they should be located at the top of a small hill.
  • In the first scene with husbands leaving for work, the house next door to Esmeralda is covered with a tarp. The next day, when the woman at Peg's door is shown, the same house is already without the tarp, even though it's not removed for 72 hours during disinfection.
  • In the film, Edward has a fleeting memory of a time before he was even created.
  • When Kim scares Edward by seeing him in the mirror, a stand is visible replacing the waterbed.
  • When Edward opens the door after everyone has left to search for him, white tape markings are visible indicating where he should step.
  • Cables connected to the bear figure are visible when Danny knocks it over with the van.
