What's left behind the scenes

  • Producer George Pal dreamed of filming a sequel to the film about the survivors of the cataclysm and their struggle for survival on another planet. Due to the box office failure of Byron Haskin's "Conquest of Space" (1955), the deteriorating health of Burgess Meredith (who was an executive producer whose name was not listed in the credits), and strained relations with the film company "Paramount Pictures," the sequel was never made.
  • The film features a so-called differential analyzer, a mechanical analog of a computer, which was filmed at the University of California, Los Angeles. It was built in 1947 by "General Electric" and cost $125,000 (or $1.5 million in 2020 prices). By the start of filming, the university already had four of these machines.
  • The finale of the film shows the passengers of the Ark landing on a frankly painted Zira. These shots could be seen during previews. In fact, George Pal wanted to create a model of Zira, but he didn't have time – "Paramount" had already sent the film to theaters.
