- Early script drafts stipulated that Drago Bludvist would once again be the film's main antagonist, and would redeem himself by the finale.
- Justin Ruppel replaced T.J. Miller as the voice actor for Tuffnut Thorston because Miller found himself at the center of a series of scandals in mid-2018.
- In September 2012, 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks Animation announced that the film would be released on June 17, 2016. In September 2014, the release date was moved to June 9, 2017. In January 2015, the release date was moved again to June 29, 2018. The film's release date was changed a total of 6 times.
- While working on the film, DreamWorks Animation had to develop new software (for example, for the Night Fury).
- In an interview, the film's director and screenwriter Dean DeBlois stated that Steven Spielberg participated in the scriptwriting process. He suggested several ideas – for example, the romance between Toothless and the ending with Hiccup and Astrid's wedding.
