As director Chris Eska explained in the DVD commentary, the flashes of cannon fire at the beginning of the film are special effects. In reality, the flashes would have preceded the sounds of the shots by several seconds, but when this pause was inserted into the film, the impression was very strange, so the authors decided to combine the flashes with the sound of the shots. Sound travels through the air at just over 1.5 kilometers per 5 seconds, the cannons were located approximately 5 kilometers from the scene, so in reality the pause between the flash of the shot and the sound would have reached about 15 seconds.
