Short Story

What's left behind the scenes

  • The entire film was shot on location without any studio filming.
  • Gary Buesy came up with and wrote the monologue about how his character got his scar himself. The script included several scenes where the character played by Rutger Hauer (1944-2019) asserted his authority over the others, simply reminding them of the need to follow the rules he had established. Initially, it was supposed to be during a dinner scene that he would put Buesy's character in his place. On the day the rehearsal was scheduled, Buesy came up with a lengthy monologue (it took up two pages of text) about his dog, which he wanted to try out. Hauer initially thought that Buesy was simply “hogging the spotlight” (since the scene was originally intended to focus on his character), and called Buesy’s story “complete nonsense” – which wasn’t in the script and greatly embarrassed Buesy. Nevertheless, Buesy’s monologue made such an impression on the director and the other actors that it was left in the film, while Hauer’s line was cut.
