What's left behind the scenes

  • To play the German Lena, Kate Blanchett studied the performances of Marlene Dietrich and Ingrid Bergman. Bergman, incidentally, was actually from Sweden.

  • Steven Soderbergh wanted to shoot the film in the old Hollywood style, without using zoom lenses or variators, which are widely used today. In addition, only incandescent lamps were used for lighting. Wireless microphones, which could capture even the slightest sound, were also absent from the set. Sounds were recorded using old-fashioned boom microphones, which forced the actors to speak loudly and clearly.
  • Initially, Steven Soderbergh intended to shoot on black and white film, but eventually used color film because it was required for the special effects in the car driving scenes. Also, the graininess of the black and white film was higher than he preferred. Subsequently, the film was desaturated digitally and released in black and white.
  • The Dora-Mittelbau Nazi concentration camp, located near the city of Nordhausen in Thuringia, was initially a subcamp of the already existing Buchenwald, and later gained the status of an independent concentration camp.
