What's left behind the scenes

  • Johnny Depp speaks with a Spanish accent in the film, which he studied by watching the 1978 series "Fantasy Island" starring Ricardo Montalbán.
  • The film's music was recorded in England, at the "Whitfield Street Studio" in London, with the participation of the London Metropolitan Orchestra.
  • During the filming of intimate scenes in "Don Juan DeMarco," the heavily tattooed Depp sometimes had to be replaced by a body double (the scene with the lady from the restaurant).
  • Johnny Depp's costumes were designed by Kenneth R. Smiley.
  • Scenes from the film set on the island of Eros were shot in Hawaii.
  • Johnny Depp agreed to star in this film only on the condition that his friend Marlon Brando would be cast as the psychiatrist.
  • When filming the scene of Don Juan DeMarco and Dr. Mickler's conversation at the table about the inconsistencies in the former's stories about himself, all of Don Juan's lines were rewritten immediately before the start of filming. Thus, Johnny Depp had absolutely no time not only to rehearse his lines but even to simply memorize his text. His friend Marlon Brando saved the situation. He spoke with the director and cinematographer to find out how the scene would be shot, and then cut out Johnny's lines from the script and taped them to a coffee cup he took in his hand. Throughout the entire filming of the scene, the great Brando managed to hold the coffee cup in such a way that the cutouts taped to it were clearly visible to Johnny Depp, but never once entered the camera's "frame!"
  • This film marked the first and only movie role for the young and promising American singer Selena (1971 – 1995), who was killed on March 31, 1995, by her own friend Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club. The film was released in theaters just a week after the singer's death.
