- The basis for the animated film is the cult comic books “Space Pirate Captain Harlock,” which were published in the magazine “Play Comic” (1977-1979).
- The Japanese version has a runtime of 115 minutes.
- The “Space Pirate Harlock” comic franchise has fan clubs worldwide and is among the five most popular comics of all time, alongside “Star Wars” and “Star Trek.”
- "Space Pirate Harlock 3D" is the most technically complex and refined animated version of the legendary hero’s adventures. For example, motion capture technology was used in creating the characters.
