What's left behind the scenes

  • The majority of the film was shot in Bulgaria, although it is set in Chicago and partially in Tokyo.
  • The first film in the franchise not directed by Takashi Shimizu. He served as a producer in this case.
  • Matthew Knight is the only actor who reprised his role from the previous film. No other characters from the second film appear on screen – with the exception of ghosts, who are also voiced by different actors.
  • By the time work on the film finally began, Oga Tanaka had noticeably outgrown the character of Toshio, and he had to be replaced by actor Simba Tsutsumi.
  • Takako Fuji refused to play Kayako because she was tired of playing the same character for almost 10 years. She was replaced by Aiko Horiiuti, for whom this was her first film role with her full name credited.
  • The cast was not allowed to see Aiko Horiiuti in her ghost makeup, so the actors’ reactions in the attack scenes are genuine. In particular, Marina Shirgis and Joanna E. Brady recount that they were genuinely frightened when they first filmed scenes with Horiiuti as Kayako.
