What's left behind the scenes

  • Sylvester Stallone gained 40 pounds specifically for this film, increasing his waist size from 31 to 39 inches. During the weight gain process, he developed sciatica, palpitations, bile reflux, digestive problems, and headaches.
  • Miramax had high hopes for this film, as did actor Sylvester Stallone, who dreamed of ending a slump in his career. Critics' reviews were generally positive, but box office receipts were not particularly impressive; according to Stallone, he found working on the film interesting and enjoyable, but it did nothing to help his career (rather the opposite).
  • The credits state that the events shown in the film are a work of fiction, but director James Mangold himself grew up in a small town in New York State, which was home to many families of police officers. In one interview, Mangold mentioned that the plot was based on his own memories of growing up among the children of police officers.
  • The film was originally intended to be shown at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, but reshoots of many scenes were required, and these reshoots took place in May (the month when the film festival is traditionally held), so the idea of showing the film in Cannes had to be abandoned.
  • At the end of the film, when the characters played by Sylvester Stallone and Ray Liotta escort Michael Rapaport's character to hand him over to the authorities, a character played by Robert De Niro appears leaving a building with a longer mustache than usual. This was the result of a reshoot, as De Niro was already filming with Quentin Tarantino on the thriller 'Jackie Brown' (1977), where his character wore a long mustache.
