What's left behind the scenes

  • The decision to begin production on a second film was made immediately after the opening weekend of the original film. The premiere was also scheduled for Halloween.
  • Filming lasted 25 days.
  • The film's director, Darren Lynn Bousman, wrote a screenplay called "Hopeless" (The Desperate) two years ago, but no studio would approve the production of a feature film based on the script.
  • After the success of the first film, Darren was offered to revise his screenplay to reflect the specifics and atmosphere of "Saw," and to lead the filming process. Darren happily agreed.
  • The entire filming process took place in one building.
  • At the request of the MPAA, the filmmakers had to withdraw posters already sent to theaters because they depicted two severed fingers, which violated the film advertising rules.
  • There were approximately 120,000 syringes in the pit.
  • Shawnee Smith was pregnant during filming, but she didn't tell anyone.
  • Most of the actors didn't receive the last 25 pages of the script. Only the actors involved in the final scene knew the film's ending.
  • In the opening scene of the film, Darren Lynn Bousman played the Jigsaw when he sews the key into Michael's eye.
  • The scene where Detective Matthews walks down the hallway to pick up his son from the police station was filmed in the actors' wardrobe room.
  • For four days, four people replaced real needles with rubber ones for the pit with syringes.
  • The Designer's name is John Kramer.
  • In fact, Jigsaw told Matthew at the very beginning where his son was. When Jigsaw explains the rules of the game to the detective, he says: 'The rules are simple: what you have to do is sit here and talk to me. If you can do that long enough, you will find your son in the safe and secure state'. The detective didn't understand the pun – 'safe' in English means 'security', but in this case also literally 'safe'. This play on words is completely lost in the Russian dub.
  • During the filming of the scene where Obi (Will Burd) tries to climb out of the furnace through a small window, Will Burd accidentally hit Glenn Plummer (Jonas) in the face. This even required a half-hour break in filming.
  • Some of the traps actually worked exactly as they do in the film. For example, the Death Mask really closed, the revolver fired when the key was turned, and Emmanuelle Voge could not remove her hands from the box with blades without outside help.
  • When John shows Eric the way, he says that Matthew needs the last house on the left. This is a reference to the 1972 film.
  • Amanda's wounds from the needles she received after Xavier threw her into the pit disappear and reappear throughout the film.
  • When the special forces raided the Builder's lair, the clock on the wall showed 7:30. After the timer in the monitoring room counted down 90 minutes, the hands on the wall clock only showed 8:00 – only half an hour had passed.
  • When Xavier opens the pit with the syringes, the camera briefly pans to a door with a timer, behind which is the antidote. If you slow down this scene, you can see that the timer initially shows 4:00, and immediately in the next scene it shows 2:58.
  • When Gus gets trapped looking into the door's pupil, the gun fires, the bullet goes through his left eye, and blood flows down his face. However, later, when Xavier looks at the number on his neck, the eye is completely normal, with no signs of blood or bullet wounds.
  • At the 2-minute mark of the film, when the camera films Michael from behind, the unfastened strap of the leather corset holding the metal mask is clearly visible. In subsequent scenes, the corset is fastened again.
  • At the 2-minute mark of the film, a recording turns on on the television, and on the right, you can notice a small screen indicating the channel number or signal source. When the camera zooms in on the television at the 3-minute mark, the small screen is already covered with black tape.
  • When Detective Matthews sees the message for himself on the ceiling at the 10-minute mark of the film, you can notice that his last name is misspelled – Mathews instead of Matthews.
  • At the 12th minute of the film, when a police van stops on the territory of the steel mill, members of the film crew can be noticed in the reflection on the van.
  • At the 15th minute of the film, a medical device used by John Kramer appears in the frame. The device beeps, but judging by the inactive displays, it should be turned off.
  • At the 16th minute of the film, when John is shown from behind, a SWAT officer can be seen in the right part of the frame, standing nearby with his arms lowered. After a cut, this officer is already aiming at John.
  • At the 16th minute of the film, the number of laser sight dots on John’s body changes with cuts. Judging by the number of dots, four, then two, then three police officers with laser sights are aiming at John, however, the actual number of SWAT soldiers guarding him did not change.
  • At the 17th minute of the film, it can be noticed that the chain of Matthew’s police badge twists when he learns about his son’s fate and rushes towards John. After the cut, the badge is hanging correctly.
  • At the 37th minute of the film, a group of hostages finds a body to which an envelope with a clue is pinned with a knife. The position of the knife and envelope changes with each shot change.
  • At the 40th minute of the film, as Obi climbs into the furnace, it is visible that a single syringe with an antidote is hanging on a chain inside, but with a shot change, there are two syringes hanging.
  • At the 55th minute of the film, after Amanda falls into the pit, the number of syringes on her back changes with each shot change.
  • The film's director, Darren Lynn Bousman, wrote a screenplay titled "The Desperate" two years ago, but no studio would greenlight a full-length film based on the script.
  • After the success of the first film, Darren was offered to revise his script to account for the specifics and atmosphere of "Saw," and to lead the filming process. Darren happily agreed.
  • In fact, Jigsaw initially told Matthews where his son was. When Jigsaw explains the rules of the game to the detective, he says: 'The rules are simple: what you have to do is sit here and talk to me. If you can do that long enough, you will find your son in the safe and secure state.' The detective didn't understand the pun—'safe' in English meant both 'security' and literally 'safe.' This wordplay is completely lost in the Russian dubbing.
