What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the bestselling novel by David Peace.
  • A real participant in the events depicted in the film, former Leeds United midfielder Johnny Giles, sued the authors of both the book and the film “for defamation, distortion, and outright fabrication of facts.” He won the case.
  • Initially, Stephen Frears was slated to direct the film, but he left the project in November 2007.
  • For filming, a car park near Elland Road stadium was altered to resemble a Leeds United training ground.
  • Scenes set in the city of Brighton were actually filmed in Scarborough.
  • Brian Clough's widow, Barbara, who was a critic of the book, expressed disappointment that the book was adapted for the screen – according to her, many events in it were distorted.
  • From the very beginning, Frears suggested Michael Sheen for the role of Clough. He was chosen due to his physical resemblance to Brian Clough.
  • Filming lasted from May 25th to July 2nd in Yorkshire, Derby, and Mallorca.
