- The film is based on Charlotte Brontë’s novel *Jane Eyre* (1847).
- Orson Welles (1915-1985) did so much for the project that there was even a suggestion to credit him as a producer, but Welles himself refused. He stated that, in his deep conviction, a person who does not direct a film should not be credited as a “mere” producer.
