Theatre Play

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the well-known play by Patrick Marber.
  • Initially, Kate Blanchett was supposed to play Anna, but she left the project due to pregnancy.
  • Clive Owen played Dan in the original theatrical production.
  • The opera that Dan and Anna are late for, and which the audience can hear in the background, is "Cosi Fan Tutte".
  • The park where Dan and Alice are walking is Postman's Park in London, near St. Paul's Cathedral.
  • The original Broadway production featured the following actors: Anna Friel as Alice, Rupert Graves as Dan, Ciaran Hinds as Larry, and Natasha Richardson as Anna.
  • Damien Rice, who performed the song “Blower's Daughter,” also wrote a song for the film of the same name – “Closer” – but it was not completed by the time the film was released and therefore was not included on the soundtrack.
  • By mutual decision of Natalie Portman and director Mike Nichols, explicit scenes were removed from the film in which Portman's character, completely nude, performs a striptease for Larry, the character played by Clive Owen.
  • The phrase spoken by Natalie Portman's character near the end of the film – “Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off” served as the title for one of the songs by Panic! At The Disco.
  • At Anna's exhibition, the four main characters of the film gather together for the first and last time.
  • The phrase uttered by Natalie Portman’s character towards the end of the film – “Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off” – served as the title for one of Panic! At The Disco’s songs.
