What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, the film was intended to take place in New York. Preparations for filming lasted 2 months, while the actual filming in New York took 2 weeks. On the last day of filming (already close to midnight), director Peter Bogdanovich (1939-2022) received notice that he had been replaced – by Maurice Phillips (1948-2012). Bogdanovich and Phillips reviewed all the footage shot in New York and realized that it could not be used in the film. The script was rewritten, and the entire film was shot in Los Angeles.
  • To prepare for the role, Richard Pryor (1940-2005) spent three weeks learning the walk of his character, who had lost the ability to walk properly due to illness. In some scenes, you can even see that Pryor is being supported, otherwise he would simply fall into the camera.
