- American writer Paul Bowles, author of the novel "The Sheltering Sky," on which the film is based, appears in the film's finale as the narrator.
- Natasha Richardson wrote to Bernardo Bertolucci asking for the role of Kit.
- Paul Bowles, the author of the novel on which the film is based, remained extremely dissatisfied with the work of director Bernardo Bertolucci.
- In 1964, Robert Aldrich announced that his next film after "Phoenix" would be "The Sheltering Sky" based on the book by Paul Bowles. Director Nicholas Roeg also wanted to adapt the novel.
