What's left behind the scenes

  • Juliette Binoche suggested the idea for the film's screenplay to Olivier Assayas.
  • Producer Charles Gillibert confirmed that Kristen Stewart was their first choice for the role of Valentina, but she was unavailable. Mia Wasikowska took on the role, but eventually left the project, and the filmmakers were ultimately able to arrange for Stewart to join at a later date.
  • The French fashion house Chanel supplied clothing, jewelry, and accessories for the actresses, provided the services of makeup artists, and also allocated funds to increase the film's budget so that Olivier Assayas could realize his dream and shoot the film on 35mm film, rather than digitally.
  • Tom Sturridge could have played Christopher Giles, but he left the project, and Johnny Flynn eventually got the role.
  • Daniel Brühl could have played the role of Klaus Dieterweg, but he left the project due to his commitment to the advertising campaign for the film "Rush" (2013). Lars Eidinger was cast in the role instead.
