What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on Thomas Hardy's novel "Far from the Madding Crowd" (1874).
- During the filming of a scene where Carey Mulligan rides a horse, the actress fell and landed directly on her head. Ten minutes later, while filming a different scene, she fell onto her knees. Matthias Schoenaerts initially thought she was simply acting, but then Mulligan collapsed face down. According to Mulligan, she suffered a concussion that plagued her for about six weeks, and because of it, she can't even remember some moments of filming.
- Carey Mulligan suggested Matthias Schoenaerts for the role of Gabriel Oak after seeing him in "Rust and Bone" (2012).
- The filmmakers reached an agreement with the army to cease fire in the training area of Lulworth Cove (United Kingdom) during filming.
