What's left behind the scenes

  • Dudley Moore (1935-2002) was initially cast in the role of Henry, which was eventually played by George Segal. However, Barbra Streisand fired Moore because he couldn't memorize his lines. These were the first signs of progressive supranuclear palsy—a neurodegenerative disease that would ultimately take the actor's life. Ironically, in the erotic melodrama "10" (Blake Edwards, 1979), it was the opposite. Moore played the role originally intended for Segal.
  • Due to creative differences with Barbra Streisand, cinematographer Dante Spinotti left the project. He was replaced by Andrzej Bartkowiak.
  • While sorting through Greg's belongings, Barbra Streisand's character places a photograph of her parents on a shelf. The picture actually depicts the actress's father and Lauren Bacall (1924-2014), who played her mother in the film.
  • The film is based on André Cayatte's drama "Purple Noon" (1958), but Barbra Streisand made significant changes to it. Her film does not mention plastic surgery, and unlike the French film, the main characters are people of extraordinary intellectual ability.
