What's left behind the scenes
- The film's title is borrowed from a song of the same name by the punk band The Clash. The song's lyrics tell a parable about a king who, to the great displeasure of his subjects, banned rock music in his kingdom. The musicians were inspired to write the song by the ban on Western music introduced in Iran in 1979. In 1991, Joe Strummer wept upon learning that the song's title had been written on the body of an American bomb dropped on Iraq. The song itself does not appear in the film, as its creators failed to obtain permission to use it.
- Filming took place in Morocco and Afghanistan.
- A loose adaptation of the story of Setara Hussainzada, the first woman to participate in the popular television show "Afghan Star" (the subject of a 2009 documentary film of the same name), the Afghan equivalent of "American Idol".
