What's left behind the scenes

  • Jeremy Renner was cast as Jeffrey Dahmer due to his physical resemblance and because few actors wanted to play a serial killer.
  • The crow that Jeremy Renner's character catches in his grandmother's house was specifically trained for filming in movies and on television. The bird is credited as “Edgar Allan,” a reference to the writer, poet, and essayist Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849).
  • Kathryn Bigelow cast Jeremy Renner as Staff Sergeant William James in her war drama "The Hurt Locker" (2008) after seeing him in the role of Dahmer.
  • Filming in the role of a serial killer had a very negative impact on Jeremy Renner. It was very difficult for him to recover after the shooting period ended.
  • The names of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims were changed in this biopic, however, the details of the crimes he committed are shown accurately, but the credits specifically state that any resemblance to any living or deceased person or to events that have taken place is coincidental and unintentional.
  • In one scene, the grandmother mistakenly calls the main character by the name Jeremy, which is the name of the actor who played the role, not the character himself.
