  • Despite the coincidence of the title, the film is not related to the novel of the same name by Rafael Sabatini.
  • Dennis Morgan was considered for the role of Captain Thorpe, and Geraldine Fitzgerald and Olivia de Havilland were considered for the role of Donna Maria, who had previously successfully starred alongside Errol Flynn in the adventure films “Captain Blood” (1935) and “The Adventures of Robin Hood” (1938).
  • Actress Flora Robson had previously played the role of Queen Elizabeth I – in the 1937 film "Fire Over England."
  • To save money on filming, many costumes and props from the 1939 film "The Private Life of Elizabeth and Essex" were used.
