What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, Woody Allen wanted Elliott Gould to play the role of Harry Block. The role of Harry was also offered to Dustin Hoffman and Dennis Hopper.
  • Albert Brooks was the last actor to be offered the role of Harry. In an interview with Playboy magazine, he said that he received a pleasant letter from Woody Allen offering him the role. Brooks replied, "It was crazy that Allen didn't play it himself." Apparently, Woody eventually heeded his advice.
  • Woody Allen based Harry's journey on Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film "Wild Strawberries." Bergman is one of Allen's favorite directors.
  • The film marked the acting debut of Jennifer Garner.
  • The film opened the 1997 Venice Film Festival.
  • One of two films from 1997 featuring Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The other film is 'Father's Day' (1997).
  • The film marked the acting debut of Elizabeth Röhm (uncredited).
  • Max Chalavsky played Mendel Birnbaum in this film, but his scenes were cut, and his last name did not appear anywhere.
  • Initially, Woody Allen wanted Elliott Gould to play the role of Harry Block. The role of Harry was also offered to Dustin Hoffman and Dennis Hopper.
  • Demi Moore wore a wig because she had shaved her head for Ridley Scott's war drama "G.I. Jane" (1997).
