What's left behind the scenes

  • The initial scenes in the train compartment were filmed in a train standing on a siding. To create the illusion of movement, the technical crew was instructed to carry lanterns past the windows at regular intervals. According to George A. Romero, sometimes people were forgotten to be told the scene was filmed and continued to walk past the windows with lanterns.
  • The scene with Martin in the parade was not in the original script.
  • The scenes in Braddock, Pennsylvania, were filmed on location – in a suburb of Pittsburgh. Many local residents, including police officers, played extras in them.
  • Tom Savini performed all the stunts himself and always applied his own makeup.
  • During the black-and-white flashbacks, the priest genuinely recites exorcism spells in Latin.
