What's left behind the scenes

  • Joshua Oppenheimer first came to Indonesia in 2001, after the fall of the Suharto regime, to study the impact of globalization on the country. In 2004, two men took him to the shore of one island to show him the places where they killed their victims, after which Oppenheimer became interested in the themes of murder and repentance, resulting in the sensational “The Act of Killing”.
  • During the film's editing in 2013, Oppenheimer admitted that “he is breaking many taboos. He is putting the life of the surviving brother in great danger. As a precaution, there is a plan to relocate him and his family after the film is released next year.”
  • Indonesian directors who wished to remain anonymous due to fear of government pressure participated in the filming of the film.
