- The character of Nick Wilde is based on Disney's Robin Hood from the animated film of the same name, who was also a fox.
- This is already the fourth consecutive animated film produced by "Walt Disney Animation Studios" for actor Alan Tudyk, following "Wreck-It Ralph" (2012), "Frozen" (2013), and "Big Hero 6" (2014).
- This is the third Disney animated film featuring anthropomorphic animals and containing neither humans nor non-anthropomorphic animals. The first two were "Robin Hood" (1973) and "Chicken Little" (2005).
- Duke Weaselton is voiced by Alan Tudyk, who also voiced the Duke of Weselton in the animated film "Frozen" (2013). "Duke" is "duke" in English.
- The character of Judy Hopps, voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin, is named after Judy Hoffses, played by Holly Robinson Peete in the television series "21 Jump Street" (1987).
- The first of two animated films released in 2016 to feature Idris Elba. The second is "Finding Dory".
- "Zootopia" is Disney's 55th full-length animated feature film.
- The artists who worked on the appearance of Zootopia’s assistant mayor, a sheep named Miss Lambkins, drew inspiration from the characters in the classic Disney films “Play My Music” and “Time Melodies”.
- When creating the image of the city’s mayor, a lion named Theodore Lionheart, the artists based his appearance on Mufasa from the classic Disney film “The Lion King”.
- Police station secretary Clawhauser may not possess the grace of a true cheetah, but there is one detail in his appearance that clearly identifies his species – black stripes running from the inner corners of his eyes to the outer corners of his mouth.
- In an attempt to showcase the habits of herbivores, the artists “decorated” the outerwear of some animals – such as sheep, antelopes, and yaks – with blades of grass, leaves, and twigs.
- One of the film’s operators, Nathan Warner, became well-acquainted with a real cheetah during a research expedition to Africa. One of the rescued animals, presented to the filmmakers by local gamekeepers, apparently took a dislike to Warner’s camera. The cheetah, seemingly, decided to explain its displeasure to the operator and jumped on his back. Neither Warner nor the cheetah were harmed in the incident.
- The artists understood that rabbits, like hares, have a split upper lip. However, when working on Judy's appearance, the filmmakers decided to forgo this detail.
- The latest technologies allowed filmmakers to adjust the length of the fur under the costumes so that the clothes "fit" the characters. Previously, individual hairs at the junction with wardrobe items would have had to be drawn by hand, one by one, as was the case, for example, with Volt's dog collar in the animated film 'Bolt'. Given the numerous population of Zootopia, such a technology would have made filming the movie incredibly laborious.

- This is the third film in which actors Jason Bateman and J.K. Simmons have appeared together: the first was "Juno," and the second was "Up in the Air."
- "Zootopia" is the first Walt Disney Animation Studios cartoon for which Michael Giacchino composed the music.
- Although Zootopia itself is a city of mammals, it is implied that there are cities in this world for other animals as well, such as birds or reptiles.
- The character Mr. Big is a parody of the main characters from "The Godfather" and "Scarface."

- The name of the black jaguar, Manchas, means "spots" in Spanish.
- Peter Losini is a parody of Canadian television presenter Peter Mansbridge. His appearance varies in regional versions of the cartoon. In the American and Canadian versions, Losini remains a moose. In the Chinese version, he is a panda, in the Brazilian version – a jaguar, in the Japanese version – a tanuki, and in the Australian and New Zealand versions – a koala.

- The idea to create Zootopia came to the authors 5 years before the film's release – in 2011.
- Initially, the fox Nick Wilde was given the name Jack, however, during development, his name was changed to Nick, in honor of Nicholas Orsi, an artist from the visual development department who was part of the very first and smallest team creating the story and image of Zootopia. He was such an integral part of the team that the directors honored him by renaming the main character, the fox, from Jack to Nick.
- During the development of the cartoon, at least two versions existed: one told the story of a rabbit agent, Jack Savage, and was a reference to the famous 007 franchise. This version was called Savage Seas or Savage City. The second version was a dystopia in which all predators wore electric collars and were an oppressed species. The main protagonist of this version was the fox Nicholas Wilde, who was trying to raise money for his own amusement park, Wilde Times, where predators could take off their collars and feel like free animals. This plot option had a familiar name – Zootopia.
- During the creation of Zootopia, the authors were primarily inspired by nature, as well as cities such as Shanghai, Barcelona, and New York.
- In the scene in Douglas's laboratory, a map of the city with photos of missing animals hangs on the wall. The lower right photo of a wolf in a red t-shirt on a bench is a reference to the internet meme “Sad Keanu”.
