What's left behind the scenes
- The set decorators created the walls and partitions of the spaceship from takeout food boxes from McDonald's.
- In the scene with maggots crawling on a hand, second unit director James Cameron, who was just starting his career in filmmaking, placed a prosthetic hand on a camouflaged metal plate to which he ran an electric current, in order to make the maggots move. Rumor has it that this impressed producer Roger Corman and opened doors for Cameron to larger film projects.
- Initially, it was planned that the giant worm would devour the heroine, Taffy O'Connell, but at the very last moment, director Bruce D. Clark decided to replace the devouring with a rape. During filming, the worm prop nearly crushed the actress.
