What's left behind the scenes

  • This was the first Hammer film about Dracula to be shot at Elstree Studios in London. Notably absent are the driveway to the castle, the carriage path, and the moat in front of the castle, which are present in the 1958 and 1966 films. Those films were made at Bray Studios.
  • Terence Fisher was supposed to direct the film, but he was involved in a car accident and was forced to relinquish the director's chair to Freddie Francis.
  • In Australia, this was the first Hammer Dracula film to be approved by censors; the two previous "Dracula" films (1958) and "Dracula: Prince of Darkness" were banned. The film had a three-week run at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney in January 1970.
