What's left behind the scenes
- While filming took place in Niland, California, Keanu Reeves resided nearby in the town of Brawley. The actor was repeatedly seen in public places, where he readily posed for photos with fans and sometimes even impersonated characters he had previously played.
- Extras for the filming were recruited in Slab City, a peculiar settlement inhabited by down-and-out people and vagrants located nearby. Its residents were filmed in their own clothes and without makeup.
- Sound stages were not used in the making of the film. Practically the entire film was shot "on location".
- There is a misconception that the heroine Suki Waterhouse's amputated limbs are a product of computer technology. In fact, this effect was achieved through skillful makeup and masterful camera work.
