What's left behind the scenes

  • According to official sources, the original version by Michael Cimino (1939-2016) was distorted by the producers, resulting in a horribly edited film with a script that left much unclear. Only a few shots remained from the cut scenes.
  • The interiors of the Cornell's house were built in the Ventura entertainment center in Orem, Utah, to create a feeling of claustrophobia for both the audience and the actors.
  • Initially, Christopher Cain was slated to direct the film, but he soon left the project. William Friedkin was then hired to replace him, but he also departed to direct the horror film 'Guardian' (1990). Mickey Rourke suggested Michael Cimino for the director's position, having worked with Cimino on the western 'Heaven's Gate' (1980) and the thriller 'Year of the Dragon' (1985).
  • The original version's runtime exceeded 140 minutes.
  • It is claimed that filming wrapped five days ahead of schedule, which is a remarkable achievement for Michael Cimino, who is known as a perfectionist.
