What's left behind the scenes

  • 'Montage of Heck' borrowed its name from one of the collections of audio recordings where Kurt Cobain recorded all sorts of sounds, voices, fragments of dialogues and song demos in 1988.
  • As director Brett Morgen later told Rolling Stone magazine, he had planned to include Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl in the film, but he was busy filming the documentary 'Sonic Highways'. By the time Grohl became available, filming was complete, the director was quite satisfied with the result, and he decided to leave everything as it was.
  • Director Brett Morgen told Vanity Fair magazine that after Frances Bean Cobain saw the film at its premiere at the national American independent film festival 'Sundance', he walked her to her car. Before getting behind the wheel, Kurt Cobain's daughter hugged him and said: 'This is exactly the film I hoped to see'.
  • Courtney Love's opinion was not taken into account during the final editing of the film.
  • The film briefly shows the name 'Fecal Matter'. This was the name of the band Nirvana before it was changed.
