What's left behind the scenes

  • Preparing for filming, Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick repeatedly attended meetings of "Alcoholics Anonymous".
  • Lemmon recounted in one interview that during the scene with the straitjacket, when his character suffers from delirium tremens, he got so into the role that when filming stopped, the film crew had to calm him down.
  • The film touches on a rather serious topic, and the studio bosses doubted its success, so they arranged a preview screening. To their horror, around 40 pairs of viewers got up and left during the screening (a studio record). Only later did it turn out that they had forgotten to indicate on the posters that it was a drama, and viewers, unknowingly, were going to a comedy starring Jack Lemmon.
  • Lemmon recounted in one interview that during the scene where his character suffers from delirium tremens, he became so immersed in the role that he had to be calmed down after filming stopped.
