What's left behind the scenes

  • Hugh Hudson's previous film, "I Dreamed of Africa," was released in 2000. Thus, "Altamira" is his first directorial work in the last 15-16 years and in the 21st century.
  • The lead actor, the famous Antonio Banderas, was invited to visit the Altamira cave during filming, but he declined. The reason for the refusal was quite noble: since 2002, the cave has been closed to tourists (because the drawings are gradually being destroyed), and Banderas felt it would be unfair to take advantage of, shall we say, his 'official position'.
  • The role of María de Sautuola marked the debut for 11-year-old actress Allegra Allen.
  • The film is dedicated to the memory of José Antonio Lasheras, director of the Altamira Museum, who held the position since 1991. He died in a car accident on February 26, 2016.
  • In reality, the Catholic Church did not make any official statements questioning the authenticity of the drawings in the Altamira Cave. Such an initiative came only from other scientists, whose storyline actually corresponds to reality.
  • The lead actor, the famous Antonio Banderas, was invited to visit the Altamira Cave during filming, but he declined. The reason for the refusal was quite noble: the cave has been closed to tourist visits since 2002 (because the paintings are gradually deteriorating), and Banderas felt it would be unfair to take advantage of, so to speak, his "official position".
