What's left behind the scenes

  • According to Disney Studios, “Frankenweenie” was supposed to be shown in theaters as part of a package with the restored animated feature film “Pinocchio.” During a test screening, Burton testified that “children screamed from fear only during ‘Pinocchio’.” After this incident, Burton was fired from Disney Studios with the explanation that he was a “waste of manpower and money.”
  • Sparky is the nickname of the main character’s dog both in the film and in real life. Two years after appearing in “Frankenweenie,” Sparky starred in David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet.”
  • The scene in which Sparky meets a neighboring black poodle with a distinctive white streak in its hairstyle references the image of Elsa Lanchester's character from James Whale's “Bride of Frankenstein.”
  • The scenes at the cemetery and the mill are direct quotes from Whale’s “Frankenstein,” in which the role of Boris Karloff’s character is replaced by a dog.
  • Shortly before filming began, Burton lost his beloved dog in a situation similar to the one shown in the film.
