What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the true story of Don Piper, who was involved in an accident in 1989 when a truck swerved into his lane directly in front of his car. Piper was presumed dead and his body was covered while waiting for an ambulance. A priest driving by stopped and began to pray over Piper's body, and Piper began to repeat the prayer, even though the accident had severed his arm and his leg was barely attached by tendons. Recovery took 13 months. Piper claimed that while unconscious on the roadside, he went to Heaven. He was very angry with God for making him return to life and the pain that accompanied the long recovery process. Over time, Piper wrote a book on which this film was based, and began lecturing. His book, which sold 7 million copies, has been translated into 46 languages.
