What's left behind the scenes

  • All the leading news presenters shown in the film were, at the time of filming, actually working as news anchors on New Zealand television.
  • Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne was chosen for the role of Kahu from among 150 girls aged 12-15 who came to the auditions. She came to the audition at the insistence of her friends.
  • Ricky wrote a haiku stating that he hates Kingi. This refers to a character from Taika Waititi's comedy-drama 'Boy' (2010).
  • In one episode, Ricky says that all of this reminds him of 'The Lord of the Rings'. Peter Jackson also filmed this film trilogy (2001-2003) in New Zealand.
  • Uncle Hec appears in the film as an uneducated man. The actor who played this role, Sam Neill, holds a bachelor's degree in English literature.
  • During the birthday scene, the actors and film crew did 10 takes of performing the song 'Happy Birthday' in chorus before realizing they didn't have the rights to use it. Therefore, the actors spontaneously came up with the song 'Happy Birthday, Ricky Baker'.
  • Director Taika Waititi appears in a cameo role in the film.
  • One of the chase sequences is an exact, frame-by-frame copy of a Toyota Hilux car commercial that aired on New Zealand television in the 1980s.
  • Ricky wrote a haiku saying he hates Kingi. This refers to a character from Taika Waititi's comedy-drama "Boy" (2010).
  • In one episode, Rickky says that all of this reminds him of "The Lord of the Rings." Peter Jackson also filmed this film trilogy (2001-2003) in New Zealand.
